Beyond the Brief
My independent worlds, experiments + evolving creative practice.
Professional creative work often begins with a brief:
a problem to solve, an audience to understand, a purpose to serve.
My independent practice begins with the question itself.
Beyond the Brief is where I explore ideas without waiting for an assignment—developing worlds, systems, stories, experiences, objects, and ways of seeing that grow from curiosity into sustained creative practice.
Some become brands. Some become tools. Some become stories, spaces, gatherings, or things to hold. Others remain experiments.
Together, they reveal the ideas I keep returning to—and what happens when I author the brief myself.

HOW I WORK
Curiosity is part
of my process.
My independent studio gives me room to follow ideas across disciplines rather than stopping at the edge of a medium.
A question might become an interface. A recipe might become a hospitality product. An object might become a story. A story might become a world. A solution to a problem of everyday life might become a new creative practice.
That movement between disciplines feeds my professional work—expanding how I think about audiences, systems, participation, storytelling, and experience.
AUTHORSHIP
My glasses
are my medium.

Through my glasses, something catches my attention.
A pen connects the idea to my hand like a thread.
Authorship is my life experiences making it.
Across these projects, the output changes—brand, story, food, interface, object, environment, gathering, system—but the questions I return to remain:
- How do people participate?
- What makes something meaningful?
- How can complexity become legible?
- What deserves to be remembered?
- How might design make everyday life richer?
TWELVE YEARS + COUNTING
A studio that is always growing.
Beyond the Brief isn’t an archive of finished ideas. It is a living studio—some projects mature, some merge, some disappear, and new ones emerge as the practice evolves.
Twelve years into Abby Phillips Design, I’m increasingly interested not only in what I can make, but in the worlds, systems, and conditions I can help bring to life.
Work gives me briefs.
Curiosity gives me questions.
Authorship connects the two.
Welcome to the APD studio.
